How to Install Septic Tank Risers and Lids

Septic Tanks Risers- Bring Your Access To Ground Level

Tired of having to dig up your yard every time you need your septic tank pumped out or serviced? Tired of handling extremely heavy concrete lids? Sounds like you are in need of septic tank risers to bring your access to ground level! Our septic tank risers and covers are made from high quality, heavy duty polyethylene plastic which makes them very strong and durable while also allowing them to be easy to handle.

THE POLYLOK ADVANTAGE

There are many different types and styles of septic tank risers on the market today. Our Polylok septic tank risers are simply the best your money can buy. The reasons are many, but here are the most important:

FACTORY INSTALLED GASKETS

The Polylok brand is the only product on the market that comes to you from the factory with pre-installed gaskets. This means no extra work is required to make the riser system air tight and water tight! This is very important in order to keep ground water out of your tank, wastewater inside your tank, and dangerous gases out of your yard! Most other products require you to purchase or use some other form of sealant between each riser section, but with our Polylok septic tank risers you do not need to worry about it!

INTERNAL STRUCTURAL RIBS

The Polylok septic tank risers have structural ribs internally around each riser section which give them great strength and allow them to hold their shape with the pressure of soil being pushed against them once the hole is backfilled. These internal structural ribs allow the outside of the riser to be smooth, this is important because of the freezing and thawing of the ground in many areas. When the ground freezes and thaws it expands and contracts and products with structural support on the outside of the riser can actually be lifted from the tank causing damage to the riser and the seal. The Polylok products will have no issues in frost areas because they are completely smooth on the outside!

LIDS WITH HANDLES

The access lid on a riser system is one of the most important components, because it is what you see in your yard and also what you have to remove every time the system is pumped or maintained. The Polylok lids come with pre-installed handles that allow you to easily remove the lid any time you want to access the system. The lids are structurally supported on the bottom which also allows them to be relatively flat, instead of domed shaped like many other products on the market.

LARGE ADAPTER RING

In order to put septic tank risers onto your septic tank, you need an adapter ring. Polylok has one of the largest adapter rings on the market allowing you to cover up to a 25'' square opening or a 27'' round opening. This ring accepts both 20'' and 24'' risers and gives you great flexibility no matter what size your opening may be.

GET OUT YOUR MEASURING STICK!

When purchasing a septic tank riser system there are a few measurements that you must take. The first is the size of your opening. Take a measurement of the opening in your septic tank at its widest point. It is important to measure the opening and not the existing lid. You will be removing the existing lid, so its dimensions are irrelevant and can differ from the size of the actual opening. The second measurement will be the height between the septic tank and ground level. With these two measurements you are ready to make a purchase!

THE COMPLETE RISER SYSTEM

We offer many components that you can choose from to build your own custom complete riser system. Our many different options give our product the versatility to be used in almost every application, but can be a bit overwhelming when you are trying to decide which parts to order. Each component is explained in detail below.

ADAPTER RINGS

The first component that you need in order to build a complete riser system is the adapter ring. The adapter ring mounts directly to the septic tank, allowing the risers to stack, lock, and mount to it. This piece is important as the risers are not flat on the bottom because they are designed to be stackable, so it is not possible to mount them directly to the septic tank. The adapter ring gives you the flat surface you need to mount to the tank while also being able to accept the stackable risers.

We have two different styles of adapter rings and which one you choose to order will depend on the measurement of your opening. Our square tank adapter ring can cover large square openings up to 25'' or large round openings up to 27''. The round tank adapter rings come in 24'' and 20'' diameter and are designed to be placed around 24'' diameter openings or smaller.

OPTIONAL: We sell and highly recommend our Adapter Ring Installation Kit. This kit includes concrete anchors, a masonry bit to install the anchors, and butyl sealant. Using this installation kit ensures a solid mount and good seal between the adapter ring the septic tank.

RISERS

Once you have chosen the adapter ring, it is time to shop for risers. The Polylok risers come in 6'' tall and 12'' tall and in 24'' diameter and 20'' diameter. They are stackable and each unit comes with a pre-installed gasket and stainless steel screws for mounting. Use the height measurement that you took between the septic tank and ground level to determine which risers will work best for your application.

OPTIONAL SAFETY SCREEN

Polylok offers safety screens that fit inside both the 20'' and 24'' riser systems. These screens act as a secondary layer of protection if the riser cover is unknowingly damaged or removed and prevent entry into the septic tank. They also prevent pets from falling into open septic tanks!

RISER LIDS

The final component that you will need to complete your riser system is a lid. The Polylok lids are available to fit either the 20'' or 24'' riser system and come in two different styles. The standard lid has handles for easy access, a factory installed gasket, and comes with stainless steel screws to lock in place. These lids can handle foot traffic or the weight of up to a riding lawn mower driving across them.

The second style of lid is our Heavy Duty lids. These lids are completely flat, have a factory installed gasket, and come with stainless steel screws for installation. The heavy duty lids are recommended for below grade installations or areas with high foot traffic.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are some frequently asked questions that get fielded by our customer service staff. Take a look, the questions you have may just be answered below!

WILL THE LID FIT DIRECTLY ON THE ADAPTER RING OR DO I NEED TO USE A RISER?

In most cases the lid will fit directly onto the adapter rings, with the exception of the 24'' Heavy Duty Lid. The 24'' Heavy Duty Lid is reinforced on the bottom. This reinforcement is actually taller than what the adapter ring is. Because of this, the 24'' Heavy Duty Lid will only fit on the adapter ring directly if your opening is at least 24'' in diameter. Any opening smaller than 24'' diameter and the lid will not fit. ALL other Polylok lids will attach directly to the adapter ring without the need for a riser.

CAN I CUT THE RISER SYSTEM DOWN TO A SPECIFIC HEIGHT?

No. The Polylok riser system comes in 6'' and 12'' increments and it cannot be cut down to height. Cutting the riser will cause the lid to not secure properly to the cut down riser.

DO I BRING THE RISER SYSTEM JUST BELOW, AT, OR ABOVE GRADE?

It is your own personal choice to bring the riser system to grade, above grade, or leave it just below grade. The riser system seals air tight and water tight, so there is no danger in bringing it to or above grade.

SHOULD I USE THE STANDARD OR THE HEAVY DUTY LID?

The standard lid is strong enough to handle foot traffic and weight up to a small riding lawn mower passing over it. If the riser system is in a high traffic area, or is going to be ran over on a regular basis by lawn equipment, we would recommend the heavy duty lid.
