Deer Hoof Prints on Back of Pedestal Mount

1. Hi all, I'm doing my first wall pedestal and pedestal mounts and trying to figure out the back side that will be seen. Wanna wrap it in leather or something like that. BUT not sure how or what people suggest? Not looking to do a a rock or anything like that. Photos would be helpful too! Thanks for all your input.

3. for the back of my pedestals I just put sand with some deer hoof prints. its easy, don't have to worry about wrinkles in fabric, can't really see the back of wall pedistals anyways, customers love it and especially love the hoof prints.

   what I do is this...
   put very generous amount of Elmer glue all over surface at back
   pour dry sand (or dirt, small rocks) all over glue.
   I have 2 hooves from previous deer that I push into the sand and glue (need to make sure glue and sand are thick)
   let dry for several days. maybe push hooves into hoof prints a few more time to make sure
   turn mount over and brush off sand. spray with a clear matte sealer.

5. Very cool! I like that idea and will have to remember that for future! This client wants leather on the back and I'm just trying to figure out how that can be done to look good! Thanks for the great input!!

6. For a pedestal back with leather, I usually dremel out a channel around the entire edge of the back (1-2" inside from the edge). Then when I mount the deer, I tuck the hide into that channel and ensure that there is a decent amount of hide paste to hold everything in place. Around the brisket/legs you'll need to take some time and make sure it all tucks nicely and trim it all up so it fits well.

   Then, once the deer is done drying, I'll use hide paste or a spray adhesive and place the leather on the back and tuck it into the same channel. Make sure you trim the leather as closely as possible beforehand as well. The hair on the deer will cover the channel where both are tucked and it make a pretty nice looking finish job in my experience.

10. I've seen comments before on this subject and thought if sure would be nice if someone did a "tutorial" on the subject.

13. I pretty much do my wall ped baks as Rackmastr described, it works well. I normally use offcuts of the hide from the shorter side, but can't see why it wouldn't work with leather. I cut the slot with a dremel and drywall bit. Here is a fallow and a chital done the same.
